How to avoid an accident
69% of accidents in June on the M5 South-West Motorway involved rear-enders. To reduce the risks ensure you always leave a three second gap.
Reduce the risk:
- Put three seconds between you and the vehicle in front
- Raining? Leave more space!
- Stopped? Keep at least half a car length behind the vehicle in front of you
NRMA safety tip:
To estimate a three-second gap, count “one – 1000, two – 2000, three – 3000” when you see a vehicle in front pass an object such as a tree or telephone pole. If you pass the object before you finish counting then you are too close.
